Four months shy of his fourth birthday, Somsubhra Roy found himself at the centre of a heart-rending tug of love in a packed courtroom of Calcutta High Court. THE Chinese community in India is largely centred in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) and has been a part of the city for two centuries.
Most of them are from the Hakka community and they specialise in shoe-making and leather-tanning.
The other members are of Cantonese stock and are mostly carpenters.
Kolkata's Chinatown is in an area called Tangra, which was once dominated by leather tanneries and is now known for its Chinese restaurants.
The community is also known for its dentists and hairdressing salons, which are patronised by Kolkata's rich and famous, says a report by news agency Inter Press Service.
It is reported that there are now 5,000 Indian Chinese living in Kolkata, where once there were 30,000.
Most of the residents have migrated to countries like the UK, US, Canada and Australia.
There was also a Chinatown in the city of Mumbai, but the population has decreased due to migration.
According to Mumbai-based tabloid Mid-Day, there are about 400 members of the Indian Chinese community still living in the city.

Police officers raided a small business in the Girish Park neighborhood on Friday after receiving a tip that a gang was melting coins there to make into shaving blades and metal statues, local police chief Balai Kumar Sanpui said. The metal value of the coins is higher than their face value.
"We found seven steel cabinets and the coins were stacked into them to be melted later," Sanpui said.
Coin shortages in Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal state, spurred the Reserve Bank of India to take emergency measures, distributing millions of coins in an attempt to satisfy demand.
Every working day, 1,500 to 2,000 people stand in lines at the bank to exchange currency notes for coins, many planning to resell them for a profit.
Little Rhea’s porcelain features contort with pain every time she suffers a fit of cough. In a matter of minutes, her pink face changes various shades to a painful blue, as she doubles over labouring to catch her breath. Rhea is a classic victim of asthma. But a study published recently in the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy throws up some interesting facts that could come as a ray of hope for children like her.
