While India is at the threshold of a retail revolution, the baby steps came in terms of shopping centres like Big Bazaar. This was the first Big Bazaar in Calcutta and that too way north away from the usual south of Park Street centric development. It has been a big success in this middle class neighbourhood.  Big Bazaar is a chain of shopping malls in India currently with 29 outlets, in which 2 are in Kolkata, owned by the Pantaloon Group. It works on same the economy model as Wal-Mart and has had considerable success in many Indian cities and small towns. The idea was pioneered by entrepreneur Kishore Biyani, the head of Pantaloon Retail India Ltd.
